What is Yamunashtak? Yamunashtak (यमुनाष्टक) is a revered Sanskrit hymn consisting of eight verses ( Ashtak meaning eight) dedicated to Shri Yamuna Ji , the sacred river goddess in Hinduism. The hymn is traditionally attributed to the great Vaishnava saint Shri Vallabhacharya (1479–1531 CE), the founder of the Pushti Marg (Path of Grace). It is also sometimes linked to his son, Shri Vitthalanatha.
The hymn beautifully describes the divine qualities, spiritual significance, and purifying nature of the Yamuna River, which is considered an eternal consort of Lord Krishna. Reciting or singing Yamunashtak is believed to bestow devotion, inner purity, and liberation. Gujarat has a strong Vaishnava tradition, particularly following the Pushti Marg and Swaminarayan Sampradaya . Devotees in Gujarat often recite Sanskrit stotras like Yamunashtak in their original language but use Gujarati script and Gujarati transliterations for easier pronunciation and understanding. yamunashtak gujarati pdf
