Winter season officially begins with the winter solstice, which typically falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. This marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. Astronomically, winter lasts from the solstice until the vernal equinox around March 20. Meteorologically, however, winter is often defined as the full months of December, January, and February. During this season, temperatures drop, days are shorter, and many regions experience snowfall, frost, and ice.
