The lights in her office didn't flicker. But the hum of the fluorescent bulbs changed pitch. The distant wail of a siren dropped an octave and faded. Her cold coffee rippled, then steamed gently.
Then the toolkit crashed. A final message appeared, in Kael’s familiar, ghostly text: toolkit 2.7.3
The screen went black. The fluorescent lights buzzed back to their old, irritating pitch. Outside, a car alarm started blaring. Someone laughed—a real, ugly, beautiful human laugh. The lights in her office didn't flicker
She clicked it, hoping to bring back the beautiful chaos of the real world. Her cold coffee rippled, then steamed gently
Panic set in. She opened again. At the top, a new line had appeared: Patch applied. Stability: 98.7%. Diversity: 4.2%.
The toolkit opened. Its interface was shockingly simple: a list of system processes, but not for her computer. For the building. Then the block. Then the city.
