A teenage boy, Thomas, rises inside a dark, rumbling metal box. He remembers nothing—not his name, not his past. Only a name echoes in his mind: Thomas . The box doors open, revealing a vast, sunlit field surrounded by impossibly high concrete walls. Dozens of other boys, all teenagers, stare at him. They are the Gladers.
Months later. Thomas and the remaining Gladers—Newt, Minho, Frypan, and Jorge—raid a WCKD train carrying Immunes for live experiments. They free Minho, but Newt is infected by the Flare. The virus is slowly stealing his mind. Thomas vows to find a real cure, not WCKD’s lethal extraction method.
A resistance group called the Right Arm blows up the facility. They rescue Thomas, but not before WCKD captures most of his friends. Thomas learns he was a WCKD architect who designed the Maze. Overwhelmed with guilt, he volunteers for a deadly mission: cross the Scorch—a radioactive, Crank-infested wasteland—to rescue his friends.
