But the true turning point—the moment the transgender community stepped out of the shadow—came at a street corner in Greenwich Village. Most people know that the Stonewall Riots of 1969 sparked the modern LGBTQ movement. Fewer know the names of the two people who threw the first punches: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Johnson, a Black trans woman and drag queen; Rivera, a Latina trans activist.

The relationship between the transgender community and LGBTQ culture is no longer one of a dependent clause. It is the engine.
