"The pigeon was lazy. Just like my postman."

Tadeusz was quiet for a long moment. Then he pointed to the mark on the wall. "I still say you ducked too fast."

They laughed. Then silence.

They shook hands. Then Kiepski grinned.

Tadeusz looked at his old friend—the man who was never truly a friend, but something deeper. A brother by annoyance.

"Dupa," Tadeusz replied with a crooked smile. "Jeszcze żyjesz, stary grzybie?" (You're still alive, you old mushroom?)

"Remember the time you tried to train a pigeon to deliver your lottery tickets?" Tadeusz asked.

"I'm selling the flat," Tadeusz said, sitting down heavily. "Can't keep it. Too many memories."
