Malèna leaves town, humiliated and broken. A year later, her husband (Nino Scordia) returns — he had not died but lost an arm. Shunned by the town, he searches for her. Renato, now older, anonymously tells him the truth: Malèna loved only him, and the town destroyed her for its own cruelty.

As the war continues and her small pension is cut off, Malèna falls into poverty. Her father dies (partly due to the town’s cruelty), and she can no longer find work.
