Unlike many Hollywood films that use “Latin flavor” as window dressing, Los Bandoleros was shot on location in the DR. Vin Diesel (who is himself multiracial and has spoken about his own Afro-Latino roots) insisted on authenticity. The dialogue is in Spanish and English, often switching mid-sentence. Tego Calderón and Don Omar don’t play stereotypes; they play three-dimensional tiguere (street-smart) men with families and pride. A bandolero is someone who breaks the law not for greed, but because the system is corrupt. Tego explains it best: “The government steals from us.
