The itinerary was ruthless: morning rides to hounds, luncheon in a hunting lodge, afternoon billiards or archery, a formal dinner, then charades, dancing, and finally, a midnight supper. Servants worked in shifts. The entertainment was constant, competitive, and exhausting—but always glamorous. The antique big world was also the dawn of mechanical entertainment, but in a form we would now call “beautifully cumbersome.” The phonograph, when it arrived, was not a portable device but a piece of furniture: a polished oak horn the size of a tuba, playing wax cylinders that lasted two minutes. The magic lantern projected hand-painted glass slides of faraway lands, accompanied by a live pianist. The player piano, a marvel of pneumatic technology, allowed a room to dance to a waltz played by a roll of perforated paper.
